Travel expensesPart time role:
Flexible: To fit with project opening hours (9am to 2pm each weekday)
Oasis Community Housing’s drop-in centres, in Gateshead and Sunderland, provide practical help and advice to people who are in a housing crisis or who are rough sleeping.
At the Basis@Gateshead and Basis@Sunderland projects, we welcome those who come through our doors with a cuppa, a bite to eat, and the offer of a hot shower and a place to wash their clothes. Most importantly, we source emergency accommodation for people and get them plugged in to other local services that can help them on their journey to stability.
We are looking for volunteers to act as befrienders. Our volunteers engage in a variety of tasks to help maintain the Basis projects, to ensure that service users are welcomed and well supported. At Basis the volunteers’ tasks include:
- Providing practical support for service users (e.g. form filling, making refreshments, helping with laundry).
- Befriending and engaging with service users whilst in the project. Simply being a listening ear can be invaluable for social excluded individuals with chaotic lifestyles.
- Encouraging service users, recognising and celebrating progress.
- Maintaining a friendly and open relationship with the service user while observing the professional boundaries protocol outlined during the induction training session.
Hours: flexible, to be agreed between volunteer and Oasis Community Housing. We ask befrienders to volunteer for two hours on the same day each week.
Duration: A longer commitment is ideal. However, we will consider shorter term options too.
Responsible to: Project team leader and Volunteer Coordinator
Expenses: Reasonable costs incurred whilst conducting Oasis Community Housing’s business
